B-group vitamins: one group, several roles

We speak of the B vitamins in the plural, and it is no accident: behind the initial hides a whole group of different, numbered vitamins with their own roles. Understanding what a B complex covers helps in reading its label.

Why a group and not a single vitamin

The B vitamins were discovered gradually and grouped together because they were found in the same foods and were all soluble in water. They were given numbers: B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B8, B9, B12, mainly. Some numbers have disappeared from the list over successive reclassifications.

Each is a full-fledged vitamin, with its own role. They share above all a common characteristic: being water-soluble, they are not stored durably by the body, which eliminates the excess in the urine2. This explains why a B complex is often offered as a daily intake.

The main ones, one by one

The B1 (thiamine), the B2 (riboflavin), the B3 (niacin) and the B5 (pantothenic acid) participate in energy metabolism. The B6 (pyridoxine) is involved in numerous reactions1,5. The B8 (biotin) is often associated with the skin, hair and nails.

The B9 (folates) and the B12 (cobalamin) are frequently mentioned together. B12 has a particularity: it is found mainly in products of animal origin, which explains why it is a point of attention for people following a plant-based diet6. Each vitamin in the group has its own NRV.

A good B complex is recognized by the clarity of its table: the detail vitamin by vitamin, the form used and the quantity per dose.

The forms on the label

As with the other vitamins, the form matters. B12 exists as cyanocobalamin, a classic and stable form, and in so-called active forms such as methylcobalamin4. B6 and B9 also have already-active forms, highlighted by certain brands.

A careful B complex specifies these forms in parentheses and gives, for each vitamin, the quantity per dose and the percentage of the NRV6. A complete table is rather a good sign: it makes it possible to see the detail rather than a mere B vitamin complex without figures.

Full complex or isolated vitamin

Two logics coexist. The complete complex brings together the whole group in one intake, practical for a general intake. The isolated vitamin, a B12 alone for example, meets a targeted need, often identified with a professional.

The choice depends on the goal. For an everyday supplement, the complex is the most common. For a specific need, an isolated vitamin, in the right form and the right dose, makes more sense. In both cases, the detailed label remains the best guide.

Urine colour and other surprises

One detail often surprises: after taking a B complex, the urine can take on a bright yellow tint. This is due to riboflavin (B2), which is fluorescent and is eliminated in the urine3. This phenomenon is of no consequence and simply signals that the excess is being flushed out.

This kind of observation illustrates the behavior of water-soluble vitamins: what the body does not use at the moment leaves. That is also why a regular intake at a reasonable dose makes more sense than a large occasional dose.

In summary

The B vitamins form a group of distinct, water-soluble vitamins, each with its role and its NRV. On a label, look for the detail vitamin by vitamin, the form used and the quantity per dose.

A good B complex is recognized by the clarity of its table. And as with everything else, the useful information is on the back of the box, not on its front.
