What your treatment changes

Every treatment has its nutritional points to watch

Read the sources, molecule by molecule

For each of the treatments we support, research describes a deficiency and explains why it sets in. Alongside, the symptoms that the people concerned report. The journal covers every case, with its sources.

Blister packs of pink and yellow tablets seen up close Statins

Coenzyme Q10

Statins inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, upstream of both cholesterol and coenzyme Q10. Folkers measured this drop in Q10 in humans as early as 1990 (PNAS).

A deficit associated with muscle pain and weakness on statins (Marcoff and Thompson, JACC, 2007): heavy legs, aches that come from no effort.

Vitamin B12

Metformin hampers the absorption of vitamin B12 in the gut. A controlled trial measured an average 19% drop after several years (de Jager, BMJ, 2010).

A deficiency linked to nerve damage: tingling in the hands, shortness of breath, memory that catches.

A couple sitting on a sofa, medication boxes on the coffee table PPIs

Magnesium and iron

By lowering stomach acidity, PPIs reduce the absorption of magnesium. An FDA warning in 2011, confirmed by a meta-analysis (Cheungpasitporn, Renal Failure, 2015).

A shortfall tied to night cramps; on the iron side, nails that break and hair that falls more.

An open handbag, a blister pack, lipstick and sunglasses Contraception

B vitamins and zinc

On oral contraception, a review of the literature describes increased needs for folate, B2, B6, B12 and zinc (Palmery, 2013).

Reserves that dwindle, cycle after cycle: mood swings, reactive skin, soft nails.

Sleep and energy

Beta-blockers curb the release of evening melatonin: a randomised trial measured it in healthy volunteers (Stoschitzky, 1999).

Hence frequent sleep problems: longer to fall asleep, dips in energy early in treatment.
